Their primary role of the flight attendants is to ensure that all safety regulations are strictly followed as required by the international aviation law. The following are some of their routine roles and responsibilities.

  • On ground, they prepare flight plans, write reports and assist ground crew.
  • When the passengers go on board, the flight attendants welcome them with a pleasing smile and guide them in finding their seats. Then also help them with their luggage if necessary.
  • They make the passengers comfortable by helping them to access the reading materials and by providing the necessary items such as pillows, blankets, headsets and drinks. They also get their children to settle down by showing them the available entertainment options.
  • They will demonstrate the flight safety instructions before the plane takes off. It includes seat belt fastening instructions, exit location information and other emergency procedures.
  • In long haul flights, refreshments are being served to the passengers. The flight attendants also make sure that they check the needs of people with special diet.
  • It is vital for the cabin crew to have the knowledge of first aid measures. In the event of emergency, they should have the patience to handle pressure and help to calm the passengers.
  • Flight attendants should be able to adapt varying environment and passengers with different culture. They are expected to provide assistance to older and needy passengers.
  • Long hours of standing, irregular working hours, pressurized environment and breathing recycled air may be demanding. But, they are expected to remain calm and flawless all the time.
  • Other miscellaneous tasks include selling of on board duty free goods, helping with the phone/internet services, as and when necessary to the passengers.
  • They are expected to work nights, weekends and public holidays, as all the airlines operate around the clock. The duty time depends on the destination varying from 12hrs-14hrs per day and may have to fly 65hrs-90hrs per month.

Almost all the flight attendants enjoy their job as they get to travel around the world, see different places and meet diverse people.
