Course Options

The aircraft maintenance engineering career starts with basic diploma or degree in aircraft maintenance and progresses with apprentice training programs and licence examinations, which qualifies you to hold a licence. It usually takes between 4 – 5 years of theoretical and practical experience to quality. The career pathways for LAME is as follows.

 

Diploma in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering

This is a basic course that gives only the limited skills and knowledge. Normally the diploma programs take 30 – 36 months, but covering the practical elements might take up to 3 years. Successful completion of this program will gain you an employment as an aircraft maintenance technician.

 

Degree in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering

These programs are offered in some of the universities in Europe. Mostly the curriculum is designed by balancing practical and theory-based elements, for the licence and a professional degree. During the course of study, you will gain extensive knowledge on Aviation Technology as well as management. EASA part 147 requirement will be fulfilled by completing all the EASA theory modules and part of the required practical experience. After successful completion of this program, you will be employed as a technician. However, the main advantage of this program is that you will have to complete only the practical element to gain EASA licence and your skills in management paves way for a managerial position within a short period of time.

 

EASA Licence Program

These licence programs are being offered by EASA part 147 approved training schools. These organizations will follow a structured theory and practical program, which normally takes up to 30 - 36 months. At the end of the program you will be awarded with the EASA approved certificate. You will be employed as a trainee aircraft maintenance engineer and carryout duties under supervision. The advantage of following a course at part 147 organizations is that you may have to work only for 3 years to apply for EASA licence instead of 5 years.

 

TAME (Trainee Aircraft Maintenance Engineer)

This program is offered only by some of the part 145 approved aircraft maintenance organizations. The companies will hire you as apprentice and provide training under the guidance of an aircraft maintenance engineer. You will spend five years as a trainee, gaining practical experience and passing your licence exams as you go. If you choose this path, you will need to approach organizations and ask them to take you on to the program, as not all organization offer this program.

Note: Whichever pathway you choose, you are required to hold your local (country that you are employed) civil aviation Aircraft Maintenance Engineer Licence to sign out an aircraft.
