Strain

The distortion of shape that occurs when a body is under stress is called as strain. It is very small and is dimensionless. A DTI (Dial Test Indicator) is used to measure the amount of strain. The measurement ratio for strain is given below.

    The shear strain is measured by using the following ratio.

x = relative movement between the layers

L = perpendicular distance between the surfaces
