Sleep

Sleep

Sleep is a daily rhythm that soothes and revitalises us after a long day of work. A good night sleep is the only medicine for most body problems. Sleep does not shut off the body and brain functions, but helps the brain to oversee a wide range of biological maintenance, increasing the energy and efficiency.

TYPES OF SLEEP

REM (Rapid Eye Movement) Sleep

This is exactly when active dreaming takes place during which the eyes move back and forth. The breathing rate shallows and the muscles are paralyzed. REM sleep renews the mind by playing an important role in learning and memory. During REM sleep, the brain processes the acquired information, strengthens the memory and replenishes its supply of neurotransmitters to boost your mind and mood.

Non-REM (Non Rapid Eye Movement) Sleep

It consists of three stages of sleep as follows.

Stage N1 (Transition to/from sleep): It lasts about five minutes with 5% of unconsciousness. The eyes move slowly, the muscle activity gets reduced but the person can be easily awakened at this stage.

Stage N2 (Light sleep): This is a true sleep that lasts from 10 to 25 minutes with 50% unconsciousness. The eye movement stops, heart rate slows and the body temperature decreases.

Stage N3 (Deep sleep): At this stage, it is difficult to awaken a person. If did so, it takes time to adjust immediately, as the brain waves are extremely slow at this deepest stage. Sleep inertia relates to this fact that a person cannot perform a physical or mental task immediately after waking.
