Thyristors

A thyristor is basically an on – off switch like other digital switches that is used to control the power output of an electrical circuit in a preset interval. The main difference is that tyristor can handle high current. Some use the term silicon-controlled rectifier (SCR) for “thyristor”. However SCR is a brand name that General Electric introduced to “Thyristor”. Thyristors are mainly used in electrical power circuit with system voltage more than 1kV or current more than 100A. The main advantage of using thyristor is that there is no internal power loss for controlling power output circuit.
